PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE – February 2016

Spring is in the air…I know it and I’m excited.  The bulbs are peeking up and soon will be blooming.  Primroses are available for sale in the stores and it won’t be long before we can get out and dig in the dirt too.

There are some exciting events happening this month.  The Garden Club is being honored at the McMinnville Downtown Association awards banquet on February 11th.  Everyone is welcome to attend.  Make your reservations with the MDA office with your check.

The Yard Garden and Patio show is at the Convention Center in Portland is on the 12th and 13th.  Ann has a carpool going on Friday the 12th.

The Garden selection committee is hard at work looking for two more gardens to replace those that had to drop out of this years’ tour.  If you know of a tour worthy garden, please let Apryl know.  We really need five gardens to have a successful tour.

I’m looking forward to June’s panel discussion as the speaker at our February meeting.  Bring your questions and they will try to answer them.

Happy Valentine’s Day and I’ll see you on the 15th.

Judy

"New Sprouts" by Rosemary Vertregt

vegetable sprout : Green sprout growing from seed Stock PhotoNew member Carolyn Nyquist has already discovered gardening resource just steps from her home --- our resourceful members, Betty & John Ballentine are her neighbors!  She has also discovered (overly) friendly deer munching away at most anything in her front yard, and the Willamette Valley clay a gardener must conquer before planting. Changes to fencing, and amendments to soil are in progress.  Now, her garden focus is on choosing hardy, less deer-friendly plants to renew her front garden landscaping.  She welcomes suggestions, and plans to attend upcoming plant sales, preferably in a large van with other eager club members!  After graduating from Linfield College, Carolyn taught culinary arts at McMinnville H.S. and in Lincoln City where she lived for several years.  She had to take early retirement because of several knee surgeries, which certainly guarantees she belongs in our club!  Carolyn has expressed an interest in becoming a better gardener and in networking with new friends. She is friendly and easy to talk with, so let's get to know her --- Welcome, Carolyn!
