President’s Message

Dear Gardening Friends,

Our December meeting was delightful!  We celebrated our Club’s 80th Birthday, had a delicious gourmet lunch prepared by the food service staff at Hillside Retirement Community, exchanged Christmas gifts with one another and created a pile of food for the local food bank.  Thank you, Beverly, for arranging such a nice Christmas party!  An added special treat was the guest appearance of Marcia Kay Whitelock, our State Club President, who presented us with a commemorative certificate for our 80 years, plus entering our Club into the State Friendship Book.  It was an honor to have her attend our birthday meeting and to also present pertinent information regarding the February State Flower Show.  Hopefully, some of you will participate with an entry, as a helper, or just attend for fun.

As 2006 ends, our thoughts turn to 2007 and the promise it holds for a fantastic Garden Tour and Garden Faire, and initiating our new Club projects.  Each of you makes our Club what it is with your creative energies, gift of time, knowledge of plants, numerous skills and your friendship and love to each other.  Together we can do whatever we set our hearts and minds to for a great 2007!  Happy New Year!

At out meeting in November, ’06 I didn’t finish the report on the meeting of April 15, 1996.  The full report follows:

The regular meeting of the McMinnville Garden Club was held at the Community Center.  Gary George of Yamhill County Roadway Beautification Project spoke asking for awards to people who had beautified their property along the roadways of Yamhill Co. The awards will be given in mid-July.

Arlene and Bob Wells donated and placed a Weeping Blue Atlas Cedar at the Gallery Players’ Garden. Virginia Klein gave the April horticultural report.

Old Business:  Mary Jo Capps announced the Covenant Church will be the location for the May 20th Flower Show.  Kathleen moved we give seed packets to the attendees at the District 13 meeting in Newberg April 18th.  Seconded and approved. The flower baskets will be arranged Wed. at 2 PM at Blanche Wolds.  (We must have been in charge of table decorations at the district meeting. DM)

New Business: Pat Hyder moved that we donate $50 to NEDS in Newberg.  Seconded and passed (NEDS was connected with Providence Health Care – people in wheelchairs had raised flower beds, but needed seeds, fertilizer and top soil.  We helped with that. DM)

Sally Thompson moved we donate $50 to the McMinnville Library for a book or books in memory of Della Cox, Dorothy Wolf and Rosie VanZyle.  (Deceased members.) Seconded and approved.

To celebrate National Garden Week, June 2-8, we will need volunteers to arrange flowers in Baby vases to take to the Willamette Valley Hospital for new babies and their families.

Garden Tour May 11th 12:00-5:00

Kathleen (Edelman) voiced concern about the McMinnville city contractor’s cutting (trimming) policy.  Sally volunteered Judy Dippold and Ruth Everingham to write a letter to city and newspaper.  Meeting adjourned 3:15 pm.

Our thoughts are with Jan Hudson whose husband is facing some serious health issues.

Thank You!

The following note was sent to the Club by member, Anita Ragsdale:

“Thank you so much for the beautiful pink hydrangea. It has been transplanted to a larger pot and will be put out in the spring.

“Steven loved flowers and had a lovely garden in Sun Valley.  It will be a nice reminder of him.  Thanks again!”
