Sunshine, Flowers, Shoppers & Enthusiastic:  McMinnville Garden Club Volunteers!!

o   to help Horticulture Co-Chairs,  Sally Parks-Brown & Apryl Garmon

o   to help put out Advertising Signs!!! {Helen Niehus &Donna Parr}

o   to act as Hostesses & Greeters at the Tour Gardens {Jacci Reed &  Stephanie Janik}

Thanks for being part of the Tour/Faire fun !  Monika & I truly appreciate the time and effort of every one of you, and we do understand that there are many extra demands on your time at this busy time of year.....just when you'd like to relax in your own gardens. *** Remember....if you take on a Tour/Faire job (or two), you are invited to join us on the Garden Pre-Tour, Saturday, June 21. Meet at Bethel Baptist Church parking lot at 9:30 am.               Rosemary and Monika

Several Garden Club members headed to Brush Prairie, WA to check on Judy Wilkerson.  Her Comcast email is FINALLY operational!  We are pleased to report she is busy clearing her acres, enjoying her farm animals and embracing more family visits.  She plans to be back to help with on tour/faire day!!!

Perennial Star                         Elsie Carpenter                              June Benson

Elsie saw the McMinnville Garden Club ad in the News Register even before moving here.  When she attended her very first meeting, she received a warm welcome and joined the club that day in 2007. Elsie jumped right in to club activities and volunteered first as hostess and then as secretary. Elsie has assumed major leadership roles in our annual garden tour and faire effort. In 2010 she and Joanne DeWitt were co-chairs for the downtown faire. In 2012 and 2013 Elsie and Judy Wilkerson were tour leaders, and Elsie describes this as a “great learning experience.” This year Elsie is the Treasurer for the tour/faire and learning about Excel spreadsheets.

Elsie was born in Port Angeles, Washington and attended the local community college for a year. Then she and three friends moved to Seattle seeking adventure and new experiences even before they acquired jobs! Elsie’s first job was with Boeing.

She married Larry in 1963 when he was in the Air Force. They moved first to Alaska, then to Texas, and back to Washington where Larry completed a college degree. After graduation, Larry was offered his first job with the U.S. Forest Service in Corvallis. They lived there for 16 years, and Elsie worked until her two sons were born. Later, when she was 39 years of age, she completed her Bachelor’s degree in education from Oregon State University. She was working in the Animal Science Department at the college when her husband was transferred to Bend, and there they both worked until their retirement in 2001.

They built their dream home in Montana on a five acre property overlooking Flathead Lake (near Glacier National Park). They could arrive at and be on the lake in 30 minutes! They loved this location but missed their family so moved to McMinnville in 2007.

So now they are close to their two sons who live in Beaverton and Bend. They have five grandchildren and delight in babysitting their youngest grandchild (age 2). Two years ago they removed almost all of the lawn at their McMinnville home and added plants for both color and variety. They did all of this hard work themselves and take pride in the improvements they have made in the landscape.

Elsie’s hobbies include traveling, gardening, reading, and she soon expects to take a yoga class. She and Larry have enjoyed 51 years of married life. Elsie looks forward to good health and the chance to keep learning new things.
