This month’s speaker:
Our October speaker is Barbara Blossom Ashmun, author of How Gardening Has Changed My Life and also Love Letters to my Garden. She will be selling and talking about her book as well as reading from Love Letters to my Garden. Here’s an excerpt from her book, Married to My Garden, pages 46-47.
“Our joy is in tending, even when circumstances are difficult, just as musicians play well even when the lights are hot, even when a string breaks, or a wrong note sounds. Gardening is not a solo performance, for we collaborate with weather and wildlife, with soil and seasons. We are limited by the strength and endurance of our own mortal bodies and the time allowed for gardening, which is never enough. Still, we play on, doing our best and playing with feeling.”

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE – June 2017 Elaine P.
June is here and Summer is near!
Before we can relax and enjoy our summer break, Garden Club has several activities scheduled.
Starting on the Second, we have a field trip to Schreiner’s Iris and Adelman Peony Gardens. If there is time, we will also visit Seabright Gardens. Ann Silverthorne has worked very hard to arrange all the wonderful field trips and we greatly appreciate it. Thank you, Ann.
On the Third, the Busy Bees will be helping children plant their raised beds at the Community Garden. Doris Crain has worked tirelessly to make the children’s introduction to growing their own food exciting and fun. Thank you, Doris.
Our own Gaye Stewart will be installed as President of the Oregon State Federation of Garden Clubs on June 14th. Congratulations, Gaye! It is well deserved. We are proud of you. It is not too late to make plans to go to Ashland to show our support and pride. Judy Eggers and her committee have worked diligently to provide the centerpieces and refreshments for the banquet. Thank you, Judy.
Our meeting will be on the 19th at Hillside. We will begin with a brunch and a pianist and have the meeting afterwards. June Benson has done a wonderful job providing quality programs on a variety of fascinating topics. Thank you, June.
This will be our final meeting at Hillside as they need that space for their own residents. It will be bittersweet. We have used that room for many years. We will be voting at the June meeting on where to have our meetings in the upcoming year.
We have another field trip on the 21st. We will be going to the Thyme Garden for a guided tour of the grounds followed by an al fresco luncheon showcasing the freshly harvested herbs.
Most of June will be spent preparing for the 17th Annual McMinnville Garden Club Tour and Faire. The pre-tour for those working at the Tour and Faire will be the morning of the 24th. The 25th is the big day! So many members have put in a lot of hours to bring it all together. Thank you, Marlene, Suzanne and Ann for your Tour leadership. Thank you, all the committee heads and all the volunteers. Thank you, Mike, Gaye and Ruth for your Faire leadership. We have five beautiful gardens and had to turn vendors away from the Faire. We are looking forward to gorgeous weather and another successful day.
Looking forward to the fall, could those committee chairs who wish to pass on their positions, please let me know. Please have your notebook ready for your successor by August 1st. Thank you all for your service. It has made my job so much easier because of your support. I appreciate each and every one of you.
Have a great summer! Relax. Enjoy your break. We may not yet know where we’ll be meeting but I am sure it will be another great year because of all the wonderful people in our club. See you in September!
Garden Tour Update – by Marlene Petersen
Get ready all Garden Club members, the 17th McMinnville Garden Tour and Faire is just around the corner. We have been overwhelmed by the members who have, will or are doing all they can to make it a rousing success. We still need everyone to be available on June 25th to either do their voluntary jobs or to fill in if needed.
The Garden owners are working hard and they are excited and if they are like your co-chairs a little anxious about last minute changes and jobs. In addition to our co-chair positions we are also doing day of tour and farmers markets duties. We are busy too.
We will do our pre-tour the day prior to the regular tour for all the “Day of” helpers. This activity is open to all club members who will be working at either the tour or faire on Sunday. Meet at Baker Creek Church parking lot no later than 9:30 on June 24th.
We will also have a no host after Tour and Faire with all helpers and the Garden owners. We will be at Golden Harvest Brewery starting around 5:30. We will celebrate another great Garden Tour and Faire with a brighter future for the community and young people we continue to help.
