While one gardener loves bright flowers, another may prefer to concentrate on plantings for fresh vegetables. In one of McMinnville’s historic neighborhoods, homeowners Tamara Chilla and Jan Messinger prove these two styles can blend beautifully in a single front yard.

“When I put in flowering plants, I’m thinking of pollinators and hummingbirds,” Tamara says. As a result, the front yard is awash with enticing and colorful blooms. Her husband, Jan, concentrates on the vegetable patches, which already offer a cornucopia of fresh produce. Jan pointed out that the artichokes serve two purposes: while most are harvested for eating, he left a few to bloom into stunning flower heads. Their bursts of bright, metallic purple dazzle in contrast with crisp yellow anise flower heads.

Take a moment out of your busy day to see this delightful yard. It is sure to bring a smile to your heart.
